Steve Jobs will be remembered as a digital visionary — the man who brought poetry to the microchip.

But before he was a legend, he was a person.

We can’t all be Steve Jobs, but we can all learn from his extraordinary life.

#1 You are what you choose to become

You are not what happened to you. You are instead, what you decided to become.
Jobs remained ever so thankful for the upbringing and the values given to him by his adoptive parents. He followed the same approach through out life, when tough situations hit him. During his Stanford speech, Jobs had some great advice for his audience – life is going to hit you with a brick on your head sometimes. Learn to take it well and never lose faith.

" You are not what happened to you.
You are instead, what you decided to become
    "

#2 Learning from your experiences is good, but so is learning from others’ experiences

You may have heard the old adage “learn from experiences”. Though the adage rings true, the life of Steve Jobs makes it sound a little inefficient, doesn’t it? There are so many things you would like to do and there is so little time you’ve been given. True, experience is a great teacher but if you rely only on your experiences to teach you, you’re going to run out of time. So what did Jobs do? He learned from the experiences of others.

#3 It’s never too early to get started
Starting as early as possible is in fact, a great idea. This is because the brains of young people are more open to new things, ideas and perspectives. Jobs was still in his teens when he took up work at HP and Atari, which allowed his brain to easily imbibe new ways of doing things. At the tender age of 20, the young entrepreneur had started Apple Inc. This tender age allowed him to put all his focus and energy on his fresh ideas.

#4 Traveling does teach you what no college or university education can

College education is important, without doubt. Probably not so much for the academic things you learn, but for the life lessons you take home with you. From critical thinking and problem solving to making connections with peers and seniors – it is packed with great learning and Jobs has acknowledged it himself. However, what he has acknowledged in addition is that traveling is perhaps the greatest teacher of all. Jobs was 19 years old when he traveled to India, and according to him, this journey to a far away land with a completely different culture and way of life, broadened his perspective.

#5 You become the company you keep

No man is an island – we need people around us to thrive. Surrounding ourselves with good people and great minds is a good way to go. Steve Wozniak, Tim Cook, John Lasseter – these are great minds themselves that helped take Apple to where it is today.

#6 It is important to find what you truly love

According to Jobs, the only thing that kept him going in the face of mighty challenges and obstacles was the fact that he was doing what he loved. When addressing the faculty and students at Stanford University, Jobs asked his audience to “find what you love”, in both personal and professional life.

" The only way to do great work is
to love what you do "

#7 People, and not money are your greatest asset

Did you know how much Jobs took home as yearly salary when he was the CEO of Apple? 1$. Yes you read that right – one dollar. This is not to say he did not value money at all. Jobs had stock holdings in the company, which had expansive financial value. However, it alludes to an important point – money is not the most important thing.

#8 Put people on a high pedestal and they will live up to it

Jobs was a great leader, having inspired thousands of people to find their own calling and to excel at their work. He was a great motivator to employees at both Apple and Pixar. Do you know what his secret was? The firm belief that people try to rise to expectation
He communicated that he expected confidence, good results or great ideas from a person to motivate that person to deliver the same. According to Jobs, this approach helped him assist his employees and colleagues unlock and function at their maximum potential
